Many of us imagine ourselves on a path leading towards a distant point in the future where we finally ‘arrive’ and everything is sorted. What changes if you swop this image for a circular mandala? Rather than striving to move away from the present moment and the undesired aspects of our experience, we turn inward toward the centre, towards deeper presence and our innate potential.
A mandala can be understood as a symbol of our inherent wholeness. At its centre lies the still point at the heart of a turning wheel — a place of balance from which our human potential can unfold. Surrounding this centre is a compassionate field where all aspects of who and what we are can belong.
Of course, much of the time we find ourselves on the stormy outer rim of our inner mandala. Here, many different influences pull us in opposing directions. We may feel consumed by our thoughts, at the mercy of our emotions, and disconnected from our bodies. This turbulence can leave us mentally constricted and distanced from ourselves and others.
Over this weekend we will work experientially with mindfulness practice, compassionate imagery, inspiring poetry and reflective journalling to find for ourselves the way into the centre of our mandala. Then from this place of steadiness and spaciousness, we may hold the complexities on the rim with greater kindness and understanding.
