On this day of nourishing retreat we will receive life lessons from poetry that connect us to the natural world. Many poets past and present look to the natural world for solace and joy. They draw our attention to delighting in the abundance and intelligence of our beautiful Earth. They also turn to the natural world to find a sense of expansion and oneness with the mystery of life, which may be hard to find elsewhere.
So let’s discover how poetry of nature can comfort, restore and energise us, setting us to rights as we take refuge from the distractions of daily life.
The poems themselves will be enough to transport us into the natural world (in our imagination), however for those who want to and have an outside space available, there will be the invitation to listen to a poem and then move outside to walk or sit, weather permitting.
‘I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.’
from Sleeping in the Forest by Mary Oliver
